In case anyone is considering starting a blog, I highly recommend you not do so immediately prior to your coworker going on maternity leave.
To say work has been exhausting over the last two months would be a massive understatement, and it’s safe to say an abundance of new job duties has zapped a lot of drive I have to write. When your days are so busy staring at the computer and being a keyboard warrior all day long, it can be tough to find motivation to jot down a few thoughts. Heck, I’ve hardly had the brain capacity to watch sports! These days, the only thing I can pay attention to are my cat and Adam Sandler movies. To say I am struggling is putting kindly. Even my therapist is like “dang girl what the heck get it together”.
I had hoped this blog would serve as a nice creative outlet and I would be able to crank out a few posts a week, or at the very least come up with vaguely interesting content once a week. The truth is that yes, I’m exhausted, but sports are also in kind of a weird place right now. There are so few good stories coming out of any of the major sports leagues right now, and all the negative stories have been coming in waves.
I mean, just look at the last few weeks in the NFL: Jon Gruden’s downfall, Henry Ruggs’ fatal DUI, Aaron Rodgers being a liar, Antonio Brown possibly having a fake vaccine card, Gruden deciding to sue the NFL…I mean, YIKES. Not only have there been a lot of sad, gross and pathetic off-the-field stories, the NFL product itself is just not terribly good this year. I feel like each week I say “wow that was a weird Sunday of football”, and perhaps it’s time to just accept that this is a weird season of football. No team is really running away with it and there are probably ten teams who I believe could convincingly win the Super Bowl. There are so few delightful storylines to follow this season and it’s kind of harshing my mellow.
Outside of the NFL, MLB is existing like a fart in the wind; it’s kind of there but not really. After the Braves won the World Series, it’s as if baseball fell off the face of the earth. Which if you think about it is wild because they have been handing out all the major awards this week and if I weren’t getting push notifications on my phone, I’d have no idea. And that’s a problem. MLB claims they wants to grow their game, but then they proceed to basically whisper into the void “Bryce Harper won NL MVP”. I can’t tell you who won any of the Gold Glove awards because MLB didn’t make a big deal about it. And y’all, I am a BIG baseball fan. Not only that, but this off-season will see MLB and the MLB Players Association try to negotiate a new Collective Bargaining Agreement and most baseball insiders think it could possibly get ugly. As one of my favorite managers Joe Girardi often says after a loss, “It’s not what you want”.
At least the NBA and NCAA football have the decency to be somewhat entertaining. My Phoenix Suns have won ten games in a row, which is awesome, but has also been overshadowed by the allegations of a toxic workplace at the hands of owner Robert Sarver. In college football, Georgia has been so fun to watch and honestly they will probably win the National Championship. Outside of Georgia, I’ve greatly enjoyed watching watching all of the chaos - the usual juggernauts look weaker (Bama, Ohio State, Oklahoma) and all have lost some ridiculous games. I personally enjoy rooting for chaos and I secretly kind of enjoy watching the Playoff Committee squirm a little bit.
My hope is that next week will be a bit easier at work, and I hope I can enjoy some thanksgiving football with my family. And hopefully I have more time and energy to write, because I really do love it. I promise, I really do. And for those of you who actually read this thing, I thank you for your grace during this busy period of my life. Fingers crossed we can get some juicy sport stories going! In the meantime, please enjoy some of my favorite tweets from the last few weeks:
